I also grew up watching Home Alone for many Christmases. I have literally seen that movie so many times during the holiday season and in school when I was younger. Everytime we watch the movie, it still makes my family and I laugh. Kevin is just so clever with his contraptions. One of my favorite traps is when Harry gets covered in feathers and glue. What a “sticky” situation. Another trap that I like is the one where Kevin puts his pet tatruala onto Marv’s face, making his freak out (I would be too to be honest). Even one of the more simple pranks can make me laugh, such as the burglars tripping over a wire and falling down the stairs. A basic, yet classic prank for all ages to enjoy. Overall I believe that superiority theory is one of the main factors at play here in regards to the reason why the movie was such and still is a hit, and also still has the ability to make people of all ages to laugh. This laughter is a result from the feeling of being superiority the burglars when the encounter and fall into the traps set up by a little kid. Throughout the entire movie, the two burglars, Marv and Harry, become entrapped into Kevin’s little contraptions and they are constantly outsmarted by a child who is significantly younger than them. I agree that everyone would think that because those two had to ability to escape prison, that they could both figure out how to outsmart a little kid, but that is clearly not the case. Overall, I hope the movie continues to be a movie that is watched during the holiday season for many years to come because it can truly bring the right environment for any night because it’s so funny no matter how many times you’ve watched it.
I agree that the movie makes good use of superiority humor. I would also have freaked out about the tarantula. Honestly just watching that scene makes me a little uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that it's become such a classic Christmas movies, since it's basically a live action Tom and Jerry cartoon. I think this is one case where it's hard to deny that superiority isn't a major factor. Though I think as a kid, I liked the sense of control, and hence relief, it gave me.
ReplyDeleteI love all of the pranks throughout the movie! There is definitely superiority shown many times. I had almost forgotten that Marv and Harry escaped from prison, yet they still cannot avoid Kevin's shenanigans. It's a funny concept for sure!
ReplyDeleteI agree that the traps the burglars are great examples of superiority theory since we all laugh at the pain they go through when trying to catch Kevin. I also hope that the movie is still watched years from now since it's so funny.
